WHY DOES GASOLINE COST WHAT IT DOES?

Jeff T. Allen, 5/17/2011
http://www.americanthinker.com/2011/05/just_who_is_gouging_us_on_gaso.html

8 % -- oil companies
18% -- federal taxes
18% -- state and local taxes
34% -- operating profits of explorers

Pulling huge quantities of wealth out of the ground isn't easy.  Finding and refining oil takes knowledge of geology, drilling technology, finance, transportation logistics, and environmental science.  Pulling even larger amounts of wealth out of taxpayers, however, takes only two things:

IGNORANCE AND ENVY

If the public weren't so ignorant and envious of such capitalist exercises as making gasoline, perhaps they might turn their attention toward the biggest cost in their lives and also the biggest reason gas prices are high: government.  If the government would spend less time punishing and restricting energy exploration and delivery, we might have more energy.  If the government, however, wants to raise the after-tax costs of producing energy, we will surely get less, driving prices higher still.

WALTER E. WILLIAMS: HOW UNIONS SCHEME TO KEEP BLACKS OUT OF HIGH-PAYING JOBS

http://dailycaller.com/2011/05/12/walter-e-williams-explains-how-unions-scheme-to-keep-blacks-out-of-high-paying-jobs/

Overall, Williams emphasized his point that government rules and regulations are an enemy of working people.

“If Congress thinks that way, I think that they are mistaken,” Williams said. “The biggest enemies of poor people and people in general is the United States government — that is making rules and regulations that systematically handicapped people.”

Two of those workers earned a whopping six figures in overtime — overtime that alone amounts to about double the median household income in the state.

And one state worker got enough overtime to make the list of the 10 highest paid employees in the state at nearly $365,000 in total pay.

The state paid employees almost $52.8 million for overtime in 2010 — the equivalent of 1,200 workers making the average state salary.

SACK 1 REGULATORY BUREAUCRAT, CREATE 98 PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS

BUREAUCRATIC BUSYBODIES:  FCC, EPA, NLRB, OBAMACARE

http://biggovernment.com/smotley/2011/05/03/sack-1-regulatory-bureaucrat-create-98-private-sector-jobs/

Big Government -- Seton Motley

The regulatory bureaucrat exists only to be a bother to the private sector.  Not every bothersome act is unwarranted – hardly anyone wants to eliminate every regulator.  But their job description is basically “get in the way of the free market.”

And as we have pointed out, there are of late many new regulators ensconced in Washington.  Which, as the Phoenix Center report states, is an expensive expansion of busybodiness.
(E)ach million dollar increase in the regulatory budget costs the economy 420 private sector jobs.
Thankfully, the Center has the simple cure – cut back on the regulatory bureaucrats.
On average, eliminating the job of a single regulator grows the American economy by $6.2 million and 98 private sector jobs annually.

USEFUL IDIOT -- ORIGIN OF THE TERM

http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/Useful_idiot

In political jargon, the term "useful idiot" was used to describe Soviet sympathizers in western countries and the alleged attitude of the Soviet government towards them. The implication was that the person in question was naïve, foolish, or in willful denial, and was being cynically used by the Soviet Union, or another Communist state. The term is now used more broadly to describe someone who is perceived to be manipulated by political movement, terrorist group, or hostile government, whether or not the group is Communist in nature.
